Telstra Goes Global 2006-10-19
Heralding a strategic move to provide IP Telephony (IPT) and voice services to businesses beyond the Australian market, Telstra International has launched "Global VoIP.” Telstra's Global VoIP is based on Next Generation Network (NGN) and customer premise equipment (CPE), while its three voice Classes of Service (CoS) and imbedded IP monitoring systems focus on terminating IP originated voice traffic, maintaining quality and network security.

Telstra's Global VoIP can lower termination costs by over 50 percent compared to traditional telephone services while saving ongoing maintenance and operational costs associated with traditional PBX systems. While cost savings is one key driver for IPT adoption, companies are also now using IPT and VoIP as key communication tools to improve business resiliencies, increase team collaboration and enhance communication needs.

This initiative is well-timed as enterprises are beefing up their investment on IP telephony. According to Access Markets International (AMI) Partners Inc, spending on IP telephony by small businesses (SMB) (1-999 employees) across the Asia-Pacific region will exceed US $ 500 million this year, up more than 40 percent over last year. Overall, SMB spending on IP telephony (including IP Centrex, IP PBX and IP phones/adaptors) is set to experience compound annual growth rates of more than 45 percent in the next five years.

Telstra's Global VoIP off-net termination solution comes with three selectable Classes of Service - premium, enhanced and standard - that can be applied to each originating extension on the network. "In order to manage costs and quality, customers may choose a different CoS for different phone extensions on their network depending on the unique needs of each user. By not limiting choice to only one class for the entire office, Telstra's Global VoIP service brings flexibility and cost savings to the enterprise," said John Paitaridis, regional director Asia, Telstra International.
