UK businesses slow to take up VoIP

Half as many UK enterprises have taken up IP telephony systems and unified communications networks - systems that integrate data and IP telephony - than in the US.
The study, which was commissioned by Dimension Data and polled 390 IT managers and 524 end users across thirteen countries, revealed that 60 per cent of US companies use VoIP, whereas only 33 per cent of UK businesses employ the IP telephony system.
And the UK is also behind other European countries, trailing the Benelux countries' 44 per cent and France's 35 per cent, matching Germany and ahead only of Switzerland on 28 per cent.
Steve Blood, research vice-president at Gartner, told ComputerWeekly that the US leads the way in VoIP adoption because a lot of the technology originates there and companies are also motivated to implement VoIP by the poor quality indoor mobile phone services.
Take up of unified communications networks was also much higher in the US, where 53 per cent of companies had deployed the systems, compared to 28 per cent in the UK. Even Asia, which had a lesser take up of VoIP than the UK, has adopted more single network integration.
