Verizon Business' VoIP Boosts Microsoft Windows 'Live Call for Free' 2007-06-06
In its quest to provide consumers with an easy-to-use, ready to hand, and cost-effective way to search services, Microsoft has collaborated with Verizon Business, a unit of Verizon Communications and a leading supplier of advanced communications and information technology (IT) solutions to large enterprises.

Consumers who frequently visit the Microsoft site, http://maps.live.com/, can now make free PC-to-phone calls to merchants for businesses such as area restaurants, hotels, or car dealerships via Verizon Business’ IP network. Windows ‘Live Call for Free’ from Microsoft utilizes Verizon Business’ advanced VoIP technology and global network to offer this service.

The users just need to enter a business or category in the top search box on the site, followed by a city, address, or landmark in the subsequent search box. The merchant results are displayed in the left column, listed by the business name. Users then click “Call For Free” and select “Use My Computer” to call the participating merchant.

According to Brian Arbogast, corporate vice president of the Windows Live Developer and Communication Platform at Microsoft Corporation, “Together, Microsoft and Verizon Business have built standards-based Web solutions, bringing new applications to life. Because it is a Web-based solution, Windows Live Call for Free allows for the easy integration of voice with other multimedia Web services such as Live Search. These voice-based services are filling a real need today while paving the way for future enhanced service offerings.”

Verizon Business’ SIP Gateway Service encourages Microsoft to offer packet-based telephony products and services easily to their consumers.

Nancy Gofus, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Business, said in a statement, “We continue to deliver on the promise of our strategic alliance with Microsoft by developing and delivering next-generation services.”

“This new service, which adds value for Microsoft advertising partners while enhancing the Live Search experience, is the latest in a long string of innovations that Verizon and Microsoft have brought to market since entering into a global strategic relationship in May 2004,” she added.
