VoIP capability of iPhone is demonstrated

Truphone, an internet telephony company focussed on bringing voice over internet protocol (VoIP) to mass-market mobile phones, made the demonstration at DEMOfall07, an annual launch venue for new products and companies in San Diego.
The company showed how to instigate a call from the Apple iPhone handset and then route it to Truphone's server through a wireless connection.
Truphone's programme uses third-party installers and therefore does not need to unlock the iPhone’s SIM card, a process which Apple claimed last week can cause the device irreparable damage.
A spokesperson for the company stressed that the demonstration was by no means an official commercial launch.
James Tagg, CEO at Truphone, said: "Truphone is truly the mobile operator for the internet age and our aim is to see Truphone available on all cellular phones with the inherent functionality needed to make VoIP calls."
He added that the company was pleased to show these plans "working for real" on the iPhone.
DEMO is held twice a year, in February and September.
