VoIP makes Peace with Faxing
2006-12-07

Faxing, a technology most thought would have gone the way of the typewriter and telegram by now, is getting an IP reprieve. Atlanta based Intelliverse announced its support of the T.38 standard for facsimile transmissions over IP this week. For the many companies still dependent on faxes and hesitant to switch to VoIP or having faxing difficulties with their current systems, this is an especially significant development.
Traditional faxing over IP is unreliable as even minimal interference can cause dropped packets, resulting in errors or failed faxes. But starting in January, service providers using Intelliverse will be able to offer an IP faxing solution to their small and medium businesses. With the T.38 standard, faxes will be sent in real-time but with a protocol similar to email, where the information will be stored first then sent. Intelliverse says that faxing with the T.38 standard will be just as reliable as traditional faxing over TDM circuits.
“The key here is that this standard was designed specifically for faxes so it takes into account the fact that a data connection will never be pure.” says says Frank Paterno, VP of Marketing at Intelliverse.
The T.38 corrects network delays by tricking the terminal into thinking its communicating with another T.38 terminal. Buffer management techniques then correct missing or delayed packets to allow for a complete and error free fax. For the SMBs hesitant to make the leap to VoIP, this development will be an excellent selling point.
As for the resilience of the paper based technology in a digital world, Intelliverse saw that it was logical given current alternatives. “The business world is not at all close to agreeing on an electronic signature standard.” says Paterno. “In many industries (e.g., real estate, legal, financial) a handwritten signature is still the ultimate stamp of approval. Until this paradigm is changed, electronic images of real paper documents will need to be kept and communicated.” Paterno aslo notes that modern day faxing alternatives like scanning are “clunky” and overly complicated.
The T.38 technology will be available immediately with Intelliverse's hosted VoIP PBX for SMB, Talking Planet Business solution. They recently completed their T.38 certification with Global Crossing's network, an international service provider.
“We will continue to concentrate on developing features that are practical and useful to small business, including conferencing services, video messaging, and presence/status applications.” says Paterno. Other features they are developing for SMBs include ACD and call queuing functionality, more integrations with IP based end points, and web-based “click to call” functionality.
