VoIP sector grows by 66 per cent in a year and will triple again in 2008

This reflects a 66 per cent growth over the previous year, which itself demonstrated a more than doubling of VoIP performance in 2004. Forecasts are that the burgeoning sector will see total revenues triple next year.
Residential hosted VoIP revenues soared 68 per cent year-on-year, outpacing managed IP PBX services by 23 percentage points. Residential/SOHO subscribers account for the bulk of service fees, contributing some 71 per cent to the total.
Over the course of the past 12 months, the number of VoIP subscribers almost doubled to 46.5 millions, with the Asia Pacific region accounting for 46 per cent of that total.
“The Asia Pacific has been leading the VoIP services scene for a couple of years, with Japan’s SoftBank pioneering the service and taking a strong lead, but the EMEA and North America regions have gained some ground at the expense of Asia in the last two years,” says analyst Ste´phane Te´ral, who also lauded the sector's growth in Latin America.
Softbank remains the top VoIP service provider overall and controls 18 per cent of the global market.
