VoIP Week in Review from TMCnet
2006-11-23

This week, the VoIP Minute Watch brings you news from iSkoot, Skype, Juniper, 8x8, Verizon, Coms and Orange Business.
iSkoot announced on Monday that it is powering Skype's mobile system for mobile phone users as part of Hutchison’s 3 X-Series global launch offering. Via iSkoot’s platform, 3 X-Series customers will be able to make and receive unlimited Skype calls with Skype PC users globally, as well as to any other Skype 3 X-Series mobile customer.
The X-Series from 3 with iSkoot’s enabler technology will extend all the VoIP functionality of Skype to the mobile handset. The first two handsets that will support the new mobile Skype Internet calling are the Nokia N73 and the Sony Ericsson W950.
Also on Monday, Juniper Networks announced that it entered into an agreement with NEC in order to develop IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-based Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) systems for wired and wireless service providers. The move will enable the Internet and the cellular worlds to merge.
The companies decided to join forces to offer converged services over a single IP network by combining NEC's products for fixed and mobile networks with Juniper's carrier-class IP core and edge routers and security products.
PC manufacturer Systemax announced also on Monday that it will be bringing VoIP to the masses via an exclusive offer on select desktop personal computer packages it will sell, thanks to a partnership it just inked with video and VoIP provider 8x8.
The offering is comprised of 8x8’s Packet8 Softalk voice and video softphone coupled with select Systemax VoIP Desktop Personal Computers, starting at $ 299 after rebate. The systems will be available exclusively through TigerDirect.com.
Also on Monday, Verizon Business announced that it will again allow families to connect with their loved ones who are currently serving in Iraq for free this holiday season. The telecom will provide free phone calls during the holidays for the U.S. Armed Forces personnel stationed in that country.
Verizon Business will provide the free calls from November 22 through the 28 and from December 22 through January 2. The telecom has been offering free holiday calling to Iraq for military personnel and their families for four years now. In order to enable military personnel to make the calls, Verizon Business deployed a mobile communications facility equipped with phones in Iraq.
UK-based Coms opened its VoIP online store dubbed Coms Express on Tuesday. The company will use the online portal to sell Internet-enabled handsets and headsets which can be used to make low-cost or free Internet-based calls.
Via Coms Express, Coms will offer equipment for use with open-standard VoIP services and proprietary services such as Skype. The online store will also offer online customers guidance for VoIP first time users to help them set up their service.
Coms Express currently retails products from Linksys, UTStar and Plantronics including Terminal Adapters (ATAs) which are used to connect home phones to broadband routers; USB phone handsets for use with computers; WiFi and GSM/WiFi handsets for mobile users; PBX connectors; routers, phone adapters and cables.
Orange Business Services announced on Wednesday that it has been tapped by Switzerland-based Altria ITSC Europe Deal in order to offer Philip Morris International (PMI) both a global wide area network and a local area network that will provide services including fixed voice, IP telephony, IP call centers and other IP-based services that will link the company's locations in 40 countries around the world.
Under the contract, the tobacco giant’s affiliates across more than 40 countries will receive a global WAN and 45,000 LAN ports which will connect new and existing users and enable the delivery of business applications.
The Orange/Altria PMI deployment will also include the delivery of approximately 20,000 IP phones.
There you have it folks, another exciting week in the VoIP industry! Stay tuned and read the VoIP Minute Watch for the latest news… Have a great Thanks Giving holiday weekend!
