Wi-Fi VoIP to Reach USD 15B 2007-04-17
Juniper Research has published a study that claims the enterprise VoIP over Wi-Fi equipment market will reach USD 15 billion by 2012, with Cisco attaining the top slot.

Demand for enterprise VoIP over Wi-Fi equipment will cough up USD 2 billion in 2007, according to Juniper Research.

"Cisco has a worldwide market presence and huge resources that makes it difficult for any other vendor to take market share. Other vendors such as Aruba Networks, Trapeze Networks, Proxim Wireless and Meru Networks are poised to face stiff competition, not being able to maintain a lead for more than two or three consecutive years. However, these companies are growing at a good pace and are almost on a par with each other in terms of the success in this sector," said Basharat Hamid Ashai, author of Juniper's report entitled Converged Wireless VoIP Handsets and Equipment, 2007-2012.

On the other hand, Forrester Research had conducted a study on VoIP users, and has found that the low-cost calling technology does not seem to be stomached too well by mass-market users.

Forrester Analyst Zayera Khan said that the study showed voice-over-IP navigation systems to pose a huge dilemma to users who confused by colossal icons, buttons, rollovers, and navigation features.

Khan said, "highly educated males hungry for the latest technology" stomached VoIP well.

The report, 'The VoIP Customer Experience: Work In Progress', said the VoIP vendors like Skype, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, and ICQ still haven't developed user-friendly services.

"Icons, graphics, buttons, rollovers and navigation menus are not clearly symbolised, which leads to confusion when trying to discern whether a phone symbol represents voice or video calling, for instance," the report stated. "Mainstream consumers worry about privacy and security policies because they are not displayed on all relevant pages."

"Most consumers just don't want to talk through their computer," says Forrester's North America VOIP analyst, Susan Cohen. "There are a lot of entrenched expectations in the consumer psyche about voice, like being able to use a handset."
