Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp (NTT) has trimmed its target for fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) users by 16% in the face of intense sector competition, Bloomberg reports.
Japan’s largest phone company now expects to sign up a net 2.1 million new users in its fiscal year ended 31 March, down from its earlier target of 2.5 million as set in February 2009. The group added that going forward it plans to reduce its reliance on mobile arm NTT DoCoMo to generate revenues and profit: the unit currently contributes around three-quarters of group net income.

To do this it will ramp up its fibre and broadband internet services portfolio, it said. ‘Broadband access is becoming more widespread, which means the customers that remain are increasingly difficult to get,’ Tsutomu Ebe, the president of NTT East, said at a briefing in Tokyo. ‘Demand remains strong, helped by the popularity of services such as YouTube.’
