The government of Japan is reportedly considering hiving off Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT’s) fibre-optic business to form a new standalone company, the Yomiuri newspaper claims, without citing its sources.

The government of Japan is reportedly considering hiving off Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT’s) fibre-optic business to form a new standalone company, the Yomiuri newspaper claims, without citing its sources.

According to the paper, NTT is considering the plan as part of efforts to boost fibre-optic broadband penetration in the country which currently stands at around 30%.

The state is hoping to boost this to close to 100% by 2015.
