OmniVision announced its OV14825 image sensor for mobile phones, a 14.6 megapixel device with the ability to also shoot 1080p video at 60 frames per second.
That's a far cry from the camera sensors found in most of today's phones. This year smartphones and higher-end feature phones began offering 3.2MP and 5MP camera sensors, with a few phones with 8MP or better thrown into the mix.

OmniVision claims its 1/2.33-inch sensor is adequate in low-light areas using the device's 1.4-micron OmniBSI pixel architecture. It's also designed with low power consumption in mind to help preserve your phone's battery life.

OmniVision sensors power the 3.2MP cameras in the latest BlackBerry Curve and Storm devices, as well as the Apple iPhone 3GS. The OV14825 will enter mass market production in the second quarter of 2010 and reference platforms are currently available.
