Malaysian WiMAX provider Packet One Networks (P1) has said that it aims to double its subscriber base by the end of 2010, according to Bernama.
Michael Lai, the operator’s chief executive, revealed that P1 will look to enhance its product range, while expanding coverage, in a bid to drive uptake, noting in particular that it would launch a number of WiMAX-embedded devices, including netbooks, later in the year. Lai also noted that P1 hoped to reach 45% of the country’s population, including Sabah and Sarawak, by the end of the year; as at end-2009 the operator’s network covered around 35% of Peninsular Malaysia.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, at end-September 2009 P1 had signed up around 80,000 subscribers in just over a year since its commercial launch in August 2008. By end-2009 this number is believed to have surpassed 120,000, suggesting that the telco hopes to end 2010 with a customer base in excess of around quarter of a million people.
