Qtel will have the region’s fastest mobile broadband speed of 42Mbps by the year-end after achieving download speeds of 14.4Mbps through a major network upgrade.
Qatar Telecom (Qtel) will upgrade its peak HSPA mobile broadband data download speeds in stages to a theoretical maximum of 42Mbps by the end of this year, the company has announced.

Having reached a peak of 14.4Mbps through an upgrade of its HSDPA network, the next stage of its evolution – based on HSPA+ technology – will yield speeds of up to 21Mbps by August, the operator said. It is launching a new 21Mbps-capable USB wireless modem to support the upgrade. Qtel is also preparing to begin a trial of 42Mbps HSPA+ services, with the aim of launching commercially later in the year. Over 50,000 people in Qatar currently subscribe to Qtel’s mobile broadband internet services, and these users will be able to access the new speeds on HSPA+-capable devices at no extra cost, TeleGeography reports.

Qtel executive director (Networks) Khalil Ibrahim al-Emadi said, “We have a clear road-map in place that will see Qatar emerging as one of the best-connected nations in the world. The enhancement of our mobile broadband network complements our plans for fibre-to-the-home and network upgrades that will ensure everybody can have the best Internet experience wherever they are in Qatar.”

More than 50,000 people in Qatar currently use mobile broadband solutions, logging into the Qtel network using smartphones, laptops, gaming consoles and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices. The new speed enhancements will benefit all customers, at no extra cost, and a range of value enhancements are planned for the weeks and months ahead, Gulf Times reports.
