According to data published by the national telecoms regulator Anatel, Brazil’s mobile operators collectively added a net 2.33 million new mobile lines last month to raise the country total to more than 179 million.
Of the end-March total, some 148 million (82.5%) were pre-paid lines and the remaining 31.4 million were post-paid. The watchdog notes that the states with the highest per capita penetration are Maranhao, Piaui, Amazonas, Paraiba and Para.

Anatel’s figures show that Vivo led the pack as at 31 march 2010 with a market share of 30.12% of subscribers, ahead of Claro with 25.45%, TIM Brasil (23.65%) and TNL (Oi) with 20.41%. The most popular access technology by a fair margin is GSM which accounted for 88.37% of SIMs.
