Fernando Kireff, the president of Brazilian telecoms operator Sercomtel, has told BNamericas he hopes the firm’s new pre-paid fixed broadband service will significantly drive growth in 2010, although the official declined to provide details on the company’s numbers in the broadband segment.

Sercomtel is mainly targeting the new service at people currently using dial-up modems. It has launched a pre-paid broadband service in the cities of Londrina and Tamarana, in Parana state, offering a connection speed of 200kbps (n.b. this is below TeleGeography’s minimum definition of broadband, i.e. >256kbps in any one direction) for BRL29.90 (USD17) per month.
