Sony Ericsson is getting a new chief technology officer. The company today said that Jan Uddenfeldt, currently senior vice president and senior technology advisor to the CEO of Ericsson, will become corporate vice president and CTO of Sony Ericsson effective.
At the same time, Uddenfeldt will assume the newly created role of head of Sony Ericsson Silicon Valley. He will be based at the company's Redwood Shores, Calif., offices and will report directly to Bert Nordberg, president of Sony Ericsson.

Jan UddenfeldtAccording to a press release, Uddenfeldt brings 30 years of experience in the telecom industry, during which time he has served as CTO of Ericsson as well as led the company's development of both GSM and 3G technologies. He also has experience in building technology partnerships and alignment with leading operator customers in the United States, Europe, Japan and China. Since 2008, he has been based in San Jose, Calif., and has been responsible for technology strategies for the Ericsson Group.

"Jan is deeply rooted in the telecommunications industry, and he will bring a wealth of experience and insight to Sony Ericsson," said Nordberg in a statement. "Over the years, he has gained a deep understanding of our industry's leading technologies, as well as our key operator customers around the world."

"I believe the transition of the mobile phone to the mobile Internet is truly beneficial to Sony Ericsson, whose strong focus has been in designing and creating high-end smartphones," Uddenfeldt said in his statement. "The decision to strengthen Sony Ericsson in Silicon Valley is a natural one as the area is the epicenter for the development of mobile operating systems and application software."

Co-parent Ericsson is no stranger to Silicon Valley. Last November, Ericsson President and CEO Hans Vestberg appointed CTO Håkan Eriksson to head Ericsson in Silicon Valley, home to IP companies that Ericsson acquired. Eriksson succeeded Nordberg in that position.
