Indian mobile network operator STel has revealed that it expects to spend a total on INR7 billion (USD148 million) on the acquisition of 3G spectrum and subsequent rollout of commercial services, The Hindu is reporting.
STel, which launched 2G commercial services in December 2009, won the smallest number of regional 3G concessions in the auction which concluded earlier this month, grabbing the three circles of Bihar, Orissa and Himachal Pradesh for INR3.38 million (USD71.3 million). Speaking regarding the cellco’s future plans, STel CEO Shamik Das noted: ‘Our business strategy is aimed at making benefits of mobility accessible to a large section of society in the six growth circles.

Despite being a new operator which has launched services in India in the last six months, we had aggressively bid for 3G spectrum and won licences in three circles. Strategically, our investment in 3G spectrum is targeted at being ready for all future services. Our network is compliant with third generation standards and we are well geared to keep pace with the adoption of this technology.’
