Taiwanese telco Chunghwa Telecom has announced that several undersea cables have been damaged by the 6.4-magnitude earthquake and aftershocks which struck near the southern Taiwan city of Pingtung, reports IDG News Service.
Services were disrupted on Thursday and early Friday, but Chunghwa said that global communications and internet services have now been restored, mainly by rerouting services on undamaged cables.

Cable sections affected to varying degrees are: SWM-3 (Southeast Asia - Middle East - Western Europe 3) between Taiwan and China's Guangdong Province; APCN2 (Asia Pacific Cable Network, Number 2) also between Taiwan and Guangdong; CUCN (China, U.S. Cable Network) linking Taiwan and China; APCN (Asia Pacific Cable Network) from Taiwan to Singapore; and FLAG (Fiber Optic Link Around The Globe) North Asia Loop (FNAL) between Taiwan and Hong Kong.
