TeleSign gets governmental patent on VoIP security related technology
Company TeleSign, a well renowned vendor of phone-based authentication and verification applications, declared the acquirement of a U.S. Patent for its PhoneID verification technology.
Press release from TeleSign describes the patented technology to analyze and deliver back information about particular phone numbers, phone type, geographic location, and whether the phone number is valid or invalid. All the supplementary security related data can then be integrated as an online Enterprises's user-screening process. "Statistics says that phones operated anonymously, such as pre-paid mobile and some dedicated VOIP phones, are much more likely to be implemented by scammers for fraudulent activities," said Steve Jillings, TeleSign CEO. "Our PhoneID technology enables web-based businesses to analyze all kinds of activities and transactions and make the judgment who deserve access, or enable user accounts to be flagged based on phone type." With the ever growing and use of the Web for retail and financial transactions and for access to delicate personal data, internet -based businesses require registration as a prerequisite for executing online transactions. However, individuals sometimes give false or untraceable email addresses or phone numbers, jeopardizing the legitimacy of the registration itself. Creating irrelevant accounts is also usual and common daily procedure of email spammers, who register in huge amounts and employ faked accounts to mass-distribute their spam messages. By tracking down anonymous, location-independent telephone numbers, TeleSign ensures the possibility for companies to block or flag potential fraudsters and request the use of an accepted phone type, combatting bulk registrations, securing eCommerce transactions, and stopping spammers. PhoneID is deployed by websites globally, analyzing phone numbers in about 200 countries. In addition to phone type information, the Company said PhoneID provides operational feedback such as phone number characteristics with data about city, state/province, postal/zip code and country for US and international phone numbers. The specific patent, US 7,945,034, includes the TeleSign process for determining the characteristics of a telephone number. It incorporates 34 total claims with independent claims that cover: Registering a phone number on a website based on the type of phone in use, Accepting or denying access to a website based on the phone type, Verifying the phone number by communicating a verification message.
