Mexico’s Secretario de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) has announced that only local media giant Televisa and its partners had qualified for the auction of two strands of dark fibre owned by state power company Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE), Bloomberg reports.
The Televisa consortium, which includes Megacable and Telefonica, has had its application to bid approved by the regulator, while mobile operator Iusacell had its application rejected, with the SCT claiming it had failed to agree to the auction rules. As a result Televisa will now be the sole bidder for the 20-year lease of the two strands, which cover approximately 20,000km across the country.

The sale process will begin on 25 May, with the government aiming to announce the outcome of the sale on 9 June; despite being the only participant Televisa will still be required to make a qualifying bid in line with the agreed terms of the auction in order to bag the concession. The state hopes to raise approximately MXN858.6 million (USD68 million) from the sale.
