TeliaSonera Sweden has announced that it will launch mobile broadband services based on a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Visby, a popular summer holiday destination, on 30 June.
The so-called '4G' service promises practical data rates of up to 80Mbps to enhance high speed real-time services such as television, online and enterprise applications and other mobile services that require a fast internet connection with low response times. At launch, LTE wireless modem users will have 4G coverage in most of central Visby, with the operator and its equipment supplier Ericsson planning a gradual expansion across the surrounding area. TeliaSonera launched the world's first commercial LTE services simultaneously in Stockholm and Oslo, Norway in December 2009, and is planning to cover 25 cities in Sweden with 4G services by the end of this year.

Launching on 30 June, consumers will be able to access mobile broadband services at connection speeds of up to 80 Mbps. Using equipment supplied by Ericsson, TeliaSonera said the network will go live initially in central Visby, then extended further across the city.

"Visby is strongly associated with summer and holiday – perfect for the world's fastest mobile broadband," said Erik Hallberg, president of mobility services at TeliaSonera, in a statement.

A recent survey conducted by the telco and published at the end of April revealed 54% of its LTE customers would not consider a return to accessing services via earlier 3G technology. Meanwhile 65% said they took up LTE-based mobile broadband services to complement their fixed-line broadband, Total Telecom reports.
