Lithuania’s incumbent fixed line operator TEO LT has announced it will offer residential customers internet access at download speeds of up to 200Mbps from March 2010.

The new ‘Zebra’ high speed internet plan will be available over the company’s fibre-optic network, which covers more than 30 cities in Lithuania and is available to nearly one-third of the country’s population. Currently, speeds of up to 100Mbps are available over the fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network. By the end of 2010 TEO plans to make the network available to approximately 95% of residents in Vilnius and Klaipeda, 70% of residents of Kaunas, half of the population of Siauliai, and a third of residents in Panevezys. TEO has invested around LTL160 million (USD67.2 million) in the next generation network (NGN) over the past three years and its services are currently used by more than 62,000 customers; the company predicts that the figure will rise to 100,000 by the end of the year. The telco also plans to more than double the total speed of its international internet traffic to 48Gbps by end-2010.
