Turkcell profit dips on weak currency

Turkcell, Turkey’s biggest mobile phone company by subscribers, said profit in the first quarter ended 31 March 2010 fell 25.8% as the company lost subscribers to rival Vodafone Group.
Net income fell to TRL417.6 million (USD271.9 million) from TRL562.7 million a year earlier, while revenue rose 7.1% to TRL2.25 billion. The company’s total customer base in its domestic market fell from 35.4 million at the start of the year to 34.3 million at the end of March, a fall of 3.1%.

The number of pre-paid customers was hardest hit, declining 4.2% to 24.9 million while the post-paid segment reported a 1.1% fall to 9.3 million. Average revenue per user climbed from USD10.4 per month in Q1 2009 to USD12.8 in the same period of 2010, while minutes of use rose 43.3% from 107 minutes to 153.3 minutes. As a group, Turkcell claimed approximately 62 million customers across all its subsidiaries, of which 11.9 million were in Ukraine, 7.5 million in Kazakhstan and 1.4 million in Belarus.
