UK-based telecoms operator BT Group plans to launch a commercial fixed telephony service in Brazil next month, according to BT Brasil general director Sergio Paulo Gallindo as quoted by BNamericas.
The new services, which are said to be ‘completely tested’ and ready for launch, will be provided through BT Global Services, the official said. The UK group will initially focus on the corporate segment, although Gallindo declined to comment on any goals for 2010 in terms of subscriber numbers, etc. BT Brasil will utilise NGN infrastructure provided by domestic equipment manufacturer Tropico to provide the new service. The telco holds a licence to operate nationwide, but fixed telephony will be initially available in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba, it said. Going forward, the group intends to expand coverage to other cities across the country, depending on demand, Gallindo said.

‘With this launch we complete our portfolio in Brazil, offering a unified communications solutions for the enterprise segment,’ Gallindo commented. BT already offers a wide range of products and services in the country including conferencing, platform services, identity and access management, LAN management, remote access, wireless networking, VPNs, business continuity and IP-based services.
