Irish alternative operator UPC Ireland (ntl & Chorus) reported growth in both its voice telephony and broadband internet access operations last year, but its core pay-TV subscriber base continues to contract.

By the end of December 2009 the company, part of US-based Liberty Global Inc, counted 148,100 broadband subscribers, up from 101,900 a year earlier, while the number of voice telephony customers more than doubled to 60,400.

However, the telco’s TV user base dipped 6% year-on-year to 504,800 – albeit lower than the rate of attrition reported in 2008 – leaving it well behind the Republic’s leading pay-TV provider Sky which had more than 600,000 subscribers at the same date.
