The joint venture between Australian mobile network operators Vodafone Australia and Hutchison 3G Australia (H3G), Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA), has reportedly inked a seven-year outsourcing deal with Finnish vendor Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN).
According to the vendor the JV has selected it to provide service management for a number of key parts of VHA’s mobile network (core, transmission and radio networks), while it will also provide the equipment for the core network. Under the terms of the contract NSN will combine and consolidate the two cellcos’ individual core networks, and it will provide its Flexi Network Gateway (Flexi NG) packet core platform to boost network capacity, which it is claimed will help efficiently handle the growing demand for high speed mobile data services. Further, the vendor has also agreed to expand the mobile softswitch (MSS) and home location register (HLR) enabling VHA to evolve towards a single database for all the subscriber information belonging to the two operators.

Commenting on the development Nigel Dews, VHA CEO, said: ‘This is a significant step towards delivering an improved network experience for our customers and realising important cost efficiencies following the merger,’ while Andy Reeves, chief technology officer at VHA added, ‘Simplifying our core networks and streamlining our overall network management is key to delivering a superior customer experience while achieving greater operational efficiencies.’
