Taiwanese WiMAX specialist VMAX Telecom has announced that it plans to invest around TWD1.5 billion (USD47.17 million) in the expansion and promotion of its wireless broadband services in Taipei throughout 2010, reports DigiTimes.
To differentiate its WiMAX offerings from rival mobile data services in the capital, VMAX is currently promoting its services in cooperation with taxi fleet operators in the Taipei area. The number of taxis equipped with a WiMAX-enabled device from VMAX is projected to reach 1,000 units at the end of March 2010 and further increase to 5,000 at the end of 2010 and to 20,000 a year later.

The company hopes to have attracted 40,000 subscribers to the service by end-2010, rising to 80,000 in 2011, at which point the company’s operations will have broken even. VMAX launched its WiMAX network in the capital on 26 January 2010, covering 85% of Taipei City.
