Bisnis Indonesia reports that domestic mobile operator XL Axiata, formerly PT Excelcomindo Pratama and now part of the Telekom Malaysia group of companies, plans to hold trials of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in H2 2010, subject to the receipt of a requisite permit from the government.
It is understood that initial trials of the technology for so-called ‘4G’ wireless services will be conducted in partnership with Swedish vendor Ericsson and will also involve government and educational establishments. The paper quotes XL’s Hasnul Suhaimi as saying that the joint study will explore the technical possibilities of applying LTE on its networks in Indonesia.

‘We do not want to be careless before introducing the technology,’ he is quoted as saying, noting that timing will be critical in terms of deploying its resources to meet anticipated market demand for next generation mobile services. The tests will last between three and six months and will take place in Jakarta, starting in the second half of the year.
