Chinese equipment manufacturer ZTE has announced that it has been awarded a contract by Cosmote Romania to deploy an HSPA+ evolved UMTS network.
Under the contract, ZTE will help Cosmote deploy infrastructure across all the major cities in Romania by the end of March 2010.

The network, which will be capable of theoretical peak download speeds of 21Mbps, will be installed with ZTE’s software-defined radio (SDR) technology which will allow seamless transition from GSM/UMTS to HSPA+ and, in future, LTE. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Cosmote was the only major cellular operator in Romania to not receive a 3G concession in the 2004 and 2006 licence tenders. In November 2009 the company completed the acquisition of local 3G specialist Zapp, finally gaining access to a 3G concession and allowing it to prepare to roll out mobile broadband services of its own.
